Homework
Reading homework is a consistent daily assignment throughout the year. The main purpose of this is to encourage in your child a lifelong love of reading. An important role you play is as a model. When children see admired adults reading, they want to do this also. The time you spend with your child simply sharing the pleasure of a book is just as important. This is still true if your child can technically read alone. Sharing a book helps reading become a warm, living activity, and creates positive associations and memories for your child.
Your child's primary homework will be to read 15-20 minutes a day. This may include: you reading to your child, your child reading to you, you and your child reading together, or you and your child taking turns reading. Please do not stop reading aloud to your child simply because he or she can read independently. Children comprehend materials which is too difficult for them to read easily. Your attention in this area truly encourages your child to listen and progress.
Your child will bring home a reading log each Friday. Return the completed reading log each Friday morning in the "Friday Folder." Please record the title of the books and record the "book equivalence." The guideline to determining "one-book equivalence" is: however many books are shared within a 15-20 minute period of time; or, 10 pages if the children are reading to themselves. These numbers will be applied toward your child meeting Axson's Book Challenge and being eligible to attend the our reader celebration at the end of the year. The goal for preprimary students to meet in order to attend Axson's reader celebration is the equivalent of 100 books.
